It is hoped there will be more 'extras' on the Midland League ... if there's anything you could provide to share with others, please don't hesitate ...

Midland League Subsidiary Competition 1924-1925

The information on this competition was supplied by Ronald Price in November 2010.  It has taken rather a long time to get it onto the website, but here it is, at last.  Thanks, Ron – sorry for the delay.

In the 1924-1925 season there was a subsidiary competition for Midland League clubs.  Two sections were created on a North-South geographical basis, with the teams in each of these playing each other home and away.  There was, it seems, no play-off between the section winners.  The final tables for these competitions were as follows:

Scarborough ‘s long-haul to Midland League title success

After many years as an amateur club, Scarborough F.C. turned professional in 1926.  Having spent one season in the Yorkshire League, Boro joined the Midland League and finished a creditable second behind Gainsborough Trinity, a former Football league club.  In the 1928-1929 season the team ended up in seventh place, but, with ex-Sheffield Wednesday player Arthur Price in charge, a very strong squad was put together for the 50-match league programme which lay ahead.  Scarborough went to the top of the competition after winning at former leaders Mansfield Town on October 2nd and the Seamer Road side stayed at the head of things, except for a brief spell in April, through to the end of the campaign.

1929-1930

As well as giving Boro’s league results, the table below shows estimated attendances for games where crowd figures were available and the second column from the right shows the basic result so that it is easier to trace sequences.  The dates of the games are interesting, with three games in four days around Christmas and four matches in seven days in April just part of a 50-match programme.  To cap all this, Boro’s first attempt to complete the home fixture against Staveley Town was abandoned after 55 minutes due to bad light on April 5th, with Scarborough 2-0 ahead.

Life-long supporter Steve Adamson has written two books on the club, with the official history covering the years 1879-1998 and a second publication telling the story of what happened afterwards.  There is also a first-class website paying tribute to the Boro at www.seadogsfans.co.uk which was created by another dedicated supporter, Derek Megginson, when Scarborough F.C. was controversially closed down on June 20th, 2007 at the High Court in Leeds.

Peterborough United’s 5-in-a-row

One of non-league’s more remarkable runs began with Peterborough United’s Midland league success in the 1955-1956 season.  Posh retained the title for the next two years, entered new territory 1958-1959 by winning a ‘new’ Midland League (made up largely of the rump of the Midland and North Eastern Leagues) without losing a game and completed a fifth league success in a row in 1960, prior to being elected to the Football league in place of unlucky Gateshead.

All Peterborough’s league results over these five successful seasons are shown below.  The tables include a ‘basic results’ column (second from the right) so that it is easy to see how the sequences unfolded and the right-hand column shows the official attendance at those games where the crowd figure was available.  Some of the crowds watching non-league football at the time are quite incredible.

There is more information available on these seasons (and others) at the excellent website www.uptheposh.com, which shows the dedication of at least one follower of football.  It would be brilliant if there were more examples of the same for more clubs.
