Stevenage Borough finally made it to the title and promotion to the Football League.  Oxford United held the lead for a considerable amount of time, but were unable to maintain their form and were passed by Graham Westley's side.  An excellent late finish from Luton Town propelled the Hatters into contention, but they had left it too late.

The top five opened up a considerable gap in the closing stages, with other sides in the top half of the table left behind as also-rans.  At the bottom, things went to the last day, with Gateshead and Eastbourne managing 'late escapes', leaving Forest Green and Ebbsfleet to go down with Grays.
